Is Your Electric Bill too High?

You have to consider a number of different factors to determine if your electric bill is too high. Unfortunately, people in many states don’t get a choice no matter what their bill is. They just have to pay it or their lights will go out. You have been given the power to make a choice because of Texas energy deregulation. That means, when you look at that monthly statement, you can ask yourself, is my electric bill too high? If the answer is yes, you can actually do something about it.

“To figure out why your electric bill is so high, the first thing you need to do is to figure out what’s normal.” (Bluejay) Just what is normal in the state of Texas? According to several studies, the average household will pay a little more than $160 a month. Now, compare your own statement to that average. Is it much higher? Is your electric bill too high? If so, then the first thing you need to do is decide if you are using the right electric service provider.

Since you have a choice in electric companies, it never hurts to do a little comparison anyway. You may be able to save money and you could even choose a service provider that offers green energy for an added advantage.

Some people in Texas didn’t even know they had a choice, but that’s what deregulation did. It made things so that you actually get a choice in energy. You don’t have to settle for whatever company is dictated to you. If your electric bill is too high, then this is a very good reason to make a change.

You can look at electric companies in a few different ways. Start by comparing rates. That will be important. However, when you do this, be careful. Some companies charge variable rates while others are fixed. You obviously cannot compare the two. You also need to be careful and watch for rate changes after a time period, fees, and other expenses that could affect the bottom line.

Is your electric bill too high? You wouldn’t be the only person in this country with that complaint. However, because you live in Texas, it’s actually something you can change. All you have to do is start comparing different companies and determine if there is a way to save money by making a change. It’s just that easy.

How Much Electricity Do You Lose?

When you think about your home’s electricity, it’s generally a question of how much you use and how much you pay for. However, you might really need to think about how much electricity you lose, rather than how much you use. Where is that energy being lost? What should you know about it? Actually, energy loss is one of the most important reasons to consider changing energy companies for Texas residents. Here’s what you need to know.

Energy Loss and Miscalculation

Take a look on the side of your home, or on the power pole where your home’s main breaker box is located. What do you see? It’s a power meter. It’s the gauge by which the electric company measures how much electricity your home has used over the past month and sets your bill. And it’s wrong. Old style analog gauges are often highly inaccurate and cost you a significant amount of money over the course of the year. Not only are these gauges wrong, but the meter itself is a source of energy loss – you’re paying for more electricity than you actually receive. So, what’s the answer?

Smart Meters

The answer to the energy loss and miscalculation situation is to use a smart meter. When calculating how much energy your home uses and how much you should be billed, smart meters are significantly more accurate and have much lower rates of power loss. That means you end up paying less per month just for switching to an electric company that provides you with a smart meter.

Smart Grids

Energy woes are not limited to your electric meter alone, though. There’s also a problem with old-style power grids (the network that brings the electricity to your home). While there’s no accurate figure on how much electricity is lost through old grids, it’s a significant amount. Power companies that utilize a smart grid system reduce the amount of lost power and can offer lower rates overall as a result of that.

Making Your Choice

The first step in saving on your power bill is to choose a new power company. There are lots of different providers to choose from these days, and it pays to take your time so you can make an informed choice. Don’t rush into this – take your time, compare providers, compare how much electricity is per kilowatt-hour, and ensure that the company you ultimately work with is reputable.

Lower Houston Electricity Rates Are Now Available through Deregulation

Because of deregulation in Texas, there is no need to pay more when buying electricity. Because the state of Texas allows every energy consumer to select their own electricity provider, switching between suppliers could save lots of money every month.

Since 2002, Texas has deregulated the energy market for both residents and business owners across the state. They have allowed heavy competition, where different suppliers are offering their product at reduced rates, especially when compared to the local utility company.

There are numerous pricing options available, which can save the consumer much money, based on their specific energy requirements. Before switching to a new provider, it is important to do a comparative analysis to determine exactly which provider will offer the best savings.

Switching Is Easy

Making the switch is easy, and requires nothing more than signing up. The new supplier of electricity will use the existing meter attached to the business or home, and have the local utility company deliver the power directly to the structure. It is only the generating of energy, and transmitting it to the distribution center that is available at competitive prices.

If there is any outage of power, or an emergency electric situation, it is the local utility company that is still responsible for the continuous power and safety of the system. Part of the bill will include the “distribution” portion of the delivery system, where the local utility company is paid for their services. This portion of the process is still regulated by the state of Texas.

Because regulated pricing is no longer necessary within the state of Texas, the highly competitive electric providers have the ability to negotiate prices with consumers. By shopping around, anyone that needs electrical energy can find lower rates, per kilowatt hour.

Switching to a new supplier is quick. Once signing up, the consumer will begin saving right away, by purchasing electricity at a lower rate. Most companies offer the ability to select from a variety of plans, based on fixed rates and variable rates. There has never been a better time to switch to a new provider that offers lower Houston electricity prices.

Energy sources available in the ecosystem

We live in the era of technology where every simple work is carried out with the help of machines which need various forms of energy to carry out the work. For an instance, all the general household appliances from heater, cooler, fan, refrigerator and so on all require electricity to run and work. Vehicles on the other hand need kinetic energy to move it along with the oil and gas forms of energy. Apparently, in the nature all biological systems harvest their energy from the sun, directly or indirectly which is also considered as the main source of energy. The resource from which the required energy is harvested is known as the Sources of Energy.

Humans are not the only users for these energy sources as each different living creatures utilize some form of energy to carry out their work. Plants utilize the solar energy from the sun and produce carbohydrates through the process of photosynthesis which is one of the most important functions of the flora Lifecycle. Indeed animals get their energy by eating these plants and other small creatures and likewise the food chain continues. On the whole energy can be stated as the strength and vitality required by any living creature to carry out any of the physical or mental activity.

Generally, there are two types of energy sources on the ecosystem. They are Renewable and NonRenewable sources. Renewable energy sources are sources that can be restored and are available in naturally excessively. On the contrary, the NonRenewable energy sources are limited.

Renewable energy sources:

Renewable sources of energy can be used over and over again. Renewable resources include solar energy, wind, geothermal energy, biomass and hydropower. They generate much less pollution, both in gathering and production, than other sources. These are also considered as an Environmentally Friendly as they do not cause any natural imbalances.

Types of Renewable energy sources:

  • Air (Wind Energy)
  • Water (Hydroelectric Energy)
  • Sun (Solar Energy)
  • Biomass (Alternative fuels)
  • Hydrogen
  • Inner Earth Layers (Geothermal Energy)

Non Renewable energy sources:

Energy coming from fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas and petroleum is called as Non Renewable energy sources. Uranium is also one of the forms of nonrenewable source. However, once these natural resources are used, they are gone forever. Also, the formation and usage of these cause disruption and disturb the balance of the environment.

Types of Non Renewable energy sources:

  • Coal
  • Nuclear Energy
  • Oil
  • Natural Gas

However, Energy production today continues to be dominated by non renewable sources than the renewable options. Petroleum, natural gas, coal and nuclear power account for about 93% of the entire energy produced on the ecosystem. When you go to Texas Energy Providers purchase energy for your home you can get both the renewable as well as the non renewable form of energy. You can shop around the Texas Energy market making a desired choice as per your needs ad requirement. You can also shop based on Texas Energy rates and select the cheapest offered rate for yourself and save up much dollars.

Anyhow, the three major types of energy are consumed by Texas Energy consumers are direct heat, transportation fuel and electricity. Oil is the world’s main energy source that comprises 38% of the total energy production closely followed by coal (26%) and gas (23%). Both nuclear and hydroelectric energy sources also contribute equally at 6% each with the remaining 1% coming from solar, wind, wood, wave, tidal, and geothermal sources. So when going to shop energy or your home you can get many distinct options and prices offered by these Texas Energy Providers to choose from. By being smart consumer you get the best deal available in the market!

Know more about Renewable Energy Credits

With dwindling traditional energy sources, the stress is on using renewable energy, like wind energy, solar energy, hydropower etc to meet the growing needs of residents. A “Renewable Portfolio Standard” has been passed by the Texas Legislature that requires REPs and electric utilities to produce and sell particular target levels of renewable power eventually. By 2025, 10,000 MW was set as a target to be achieved for the State’s renewable energy capacity.

What are the tax credits?

Renewable energy credits are tax credits, which refer to subtractions that are applied to the quantity of cash that a business or individual owes in taxes. A normal tax deduction is applied to a chargeable salary, whereas a tax credit is applied to a tax load directly. By presenting the tax credits for the usage and manufacture of renewable energy, the Texas government offers a financial incentive to encourage the construction, development, and operation of new renewable energy resources. Such credits are also aimed at protecting and enhancing the quality of Texas’s environment through increased usage of renewable resources.

Types of tax credits

Tax credits come in two types – production credits and purchase credits. The customers earn purchase credits while purchasing renewable energy. The majority of tax credits are offered either as a percentage of price of purchasing a renewable energy product, or at a flat price.

Companies that generate renewable energy meet the criteria for production credits. A company benefits from a particular credit for each unit of renewable energy that it generates. For instance, a company producing bio-fuels might get a credit for each gallon of biodiesel that it generates, whereas a company producing solar power may get a credit for each kilowatt hour of electrical energy that it generates.

Things to know

The Texas government started ‘Renewable Energy Credits Trading Program’ to ensure that the state achieves its renewable energy requirements in the most economical and efficient manner. Empowering customers with access to providers offering energy generated by renewable energy resources, and increasing the cumulative installed renewable capacity of the State were other objectives that led to the launch of RECs.

Though the business of selling RECs has grown rapidly, no national registry exists where details of the RECs issued are listed. Rather, the onus is on a voluntary program, which is similar to a third party audit, which ensures that the renewable energy certificates are accounted for and not counted twice.

Knowing about TDU fees

The Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) fees include different charges billed by your local TDSP (Transmission & Distribution Service Provider). Some common elements of TDU fees consist of:

  • Advanced Metering Charge: This amount is evaluated to recover a TDU’s charges related to Advanced Metering Systems, to the level that they aren’t recovered in the standard metering charge of a TDU.
  • Metering Charge: This is assessed to recover charges of a TDU for metering its customer’s consumption, to the level that the TDU charge is a separate entity totally for that purpose, which is approved by the PUC (Public Utility Commission).
  • Competition Transition Charge: This is calculated to recover charges of a TDU for non-securitized costs linked with the transition to competition.
  • Nuclear Decommissioning Fee: This charge is evaluated to recover a TDU’s expenses for decommissioning of nuclear generating locations from service, decreasing residual radioactivity to a point that allows release of the property for unrestricted utilization and termination of license.
  • System Benefit Fund: This non-bypassable charge is approved by the PUC to not go beyond 65 cents per megawatt-hour, which in turn funds the one-time bill payment support, low-income discount, commission administrative expenses, customer education, and low-income energy efficiency plans.
  • Distribution System Charge: This amount based on the cost of delivery of electricity to a consumer over wires and poles as well as other TDU facilities, but the amount doesn’t include discretionary charges.
  • Transmission System Charge: This refers to one or more than one TDU surcharge(s) on a consumer’s bill in any group. This consists of charges billed by the TDU as tariff riders.
  • Transition Charge: Once a consumer decides to move over to the competition, this charge is evaluated to recover a TDU’s costs for securitized expenses linked to the transition.

As the charges mentioned above are recurring fees, typically every electricity bill will feature them. However, while some of these are flat fees that won’t fluctuate, others may differ in each bill depending on how many kilowatt-hours you utilize in a particular billing cycle. For example, while every bill should show a fixed Advanced Metering Charge, Metering Charge will vary from one bill to another, depending on the kWh you consume in a specific billing cycle.

Your TDU fees may also feature some non-recurring fees that are assessed occasionally, such as the Move-In Fees, Disconnect / Reconnect Fees, Forward Switch Fees, Meter Tampering Fees, Meter Re-Read Fees etc.

Irrespective of whether they are non-recurring or recurring fees, TDU fees will be evaluated by the TDSP for your region.
